Dark chocolate may have a slightly more bitter taste to it, and for some it is an acquired taste, but there is no denying that it is the healthiest chocolate available on the market today. In fact, having a few chunks a day can really help to prevent certain diseases according to some research, so just what is it about dark chocolate that makes it so good for you?
The Secrets of Dark Chocolate
Dark chocolate tends to be richer in flavour as it does not have as much sugar and other ingredients added such as milk and white chocolate does. However there is a milder form of dark chocolate available and that does tend to taste a little like milk chocolate and that is ideal for people who have never really tried dark chocolate before, and for people who are weaning themselves onto the stronger stuff.
It is said that dark chocolate is good for:
• Lowering Blood Pressure
It has been previously thought that white chocolate lowers blood pressure, but according to research it is in fact dark chocolate which does. Usually this is true for people over a certain age, and who have mild high blood pressure – not severely high blood pressure!
• Antioxidants
Dark chocolate is high in antioxidants which are used to fight off free radicals. Free radicals encourage premature ageing, and they also contribute towards various illnesses including heart disease. However, if the dark chocolate is eaten with milk, it stops the chocolate from doing any good. This is thought to be because the milk soaks up the antioxidants.
Generally dark chocolate is really good for you, but some people simply do not understand that it needs to be eaten in moderation. By moderation usually a couple of pieces of dark chocolate a day is enough, not a whole bar! Also, if you are past a certain age and you are using the chocolate for health benefits, you need to remember to cut down on other foods in order to compensate for the extra calories, and also exercise regularly too.
So overall dark chocolate is good for you and that could be down to the fact that it is the most natural chocolate out of all the different varieties available on the market today. Some brands are better than others so you should always go for a well known, quality brand when buying your chocolate. As long as you do eat dark chocolate in moderation you will not have any negative effects!
